New Hope for Hip Dysplasia

Early Detection using PennHip system allows for early surgical correction

Today's Date --

Dr. Shufer recently attended the Academy of Veterinary Surgeons conference in San Diego.  Along with 2000 other veterinary surgeons, Dr. Shufer attended 3 days of lectures on the cutting edge of veterinary surgery.

While at the conference, he attended an all day certification course in the PennHip hip dysplasia dectection technique developed at the University of Pennsylvania.  This technique allows for accurate detection of Hip Dysplasia as early as 14 weeks of age.  If we detect the dysplasia at this early age, a new surgical procedure called the Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis (JPS) can be performed to help reduce the pet's chances of developing arthritis by 85-90%!

We recommend that all large breed puppies be screened with this technique at 14 weeks of age.  If they are positive for dysplasia, the JPS surgery can be performed at the same time.
