reid head2 Dear Reid,
Greetings friends,
Hi all,
Just recently back from the Western Veterinary Conference; a 5 day seminar held at the Mandalay Bay Convention center in Las Vegas.  12000 of my colleagues and I met to review the latest advances in Veterinary Medicine.  I spent about 30 hours in lectures, covering subjects from cardiology to diabetes. I spent a full day honing my ultrasonography skills in an advanced abdominal ultrasound course.  After all that "schoolwork"  I did manage to connect with old friends and enjoy some of the great restaurants in Las Vegas and even got to see Carlos Santana live at the Hard Rock!
We are busy integrating the new information I brought home into our diagnostic and therapeutic protocols in order to serve you and your pets better.

One of the highlights of the convention dealt with the importance of early detection of disease, a perspective we have always supported.  We have a series of promotions planned to help encourage preventive medicine.  This issue will outline our new "Cancer Screening" initiative!

We continue to have a great response from clients who have set up their Pet Portal pages.  They love having easy access to all of their pet's vaccine and drug history, as well as direct access to our online store.  If you haven't logged into your pet portal yet, please take the time to explore it.  This link will show a short video of how to work the system.

We are always trying to improve and grow our practice.  One way to do that is through positive reviews and recommendations from our happy clientele.   I'd like to solicit stories, testimonials and photos from you to post on this site as well as post reviews of our practice in online search engines.  Click here if you have a story to share and please post it on both our web site and the various search engines that are listed on this link.

Thank you for entrusting your pet's health care to us.

Sincerely,
Reid Shufer, D.V.M.

Saves Lives!

Cancer is the number 1 cause of death in dogs and the number 2 cause of death in cats (after kidney disease).  1 in 4 dogs is likely to get cancer in his/her lifetime.
One of the reasons cancer is so deadly, is that we often don't detect it before it is too late to do anything about it.
Imaging technology has greatly enhanced our capacity to detect cancer at its most treatable stages. Radiographs (x-rays) and Ultrasonography allow us to visualize the inner organs with a resolution that lets us detect tumors as small as a pencil eraser.  While these modalities have their limits as well, their use can greatly enhance our detection ability.

In order to improve our chances of reducing cancer related fatalities, we are instituting a Cancer Early Detection Campaign, which will run through the end of April.  During this campaign, we will be offering diagnostic imaging packages at substantial savings to you.  Our hope is that the cost reduction will make it easier for you to give your pet's the optimal care they deserve.

case Case of the Month:
Buddy Won't Eat!
buddy neal

Buddy is an 8 year old Boston Bull terrier who presented to us 2 years ago having difficulty controlling his newly diagnosed diabetes.  We adjusted his insulin needs and managed to get good diabetic control within a few weeks time.  Since then Buddy had been doing great with the exception of developing cataracts in both eyes due to his diabetes (the high blood sugar resulting from the diabetes, gets into the eyeball and seeps into the lens, which then causes water to be attracted into the lens causing the lens to become opaque).  Recently, Buddy underwent successful cataract removal surgery at the local veterinary ophthalmologist and his sight was regained.

Over the past 2 months, Buddy has had a loss of appetite and developed chronic diarrhea

busterCancer Therapy Success!
buster balesCongratulations to Buster Bales.  Buster is an 8 year old Boxer who is battling a type of cancer known as lymphosarcoma.  Buster has just successfully completed the 25 week chemotherapy protocol developed at the University of Wisconsin Veterinary School.  So far Buster has had an uncomplicated chemotherapy and he is enjoying excellent, cancer-free remission.  While chemotherapy is never curative with lymphosarcoma, it is generally well tolerated and affords the owner and pet to enjoy quality time together.  We are hoping that Buster's remission lasts for many months to come.  Of course, we will be monitoring him regularly, and are prepared to attempt additional chemotherapy should he fall out of remission.
