| | URGENT PET FOOD RECALL!
 If you have fed your dog or cat canned or pouched food at any time since November from any of the following manufacturers, please be aware that some of these foods are under an urgent recall. The supplier has issued a warning that these foods may cause kidney damage and even death in cats and dogs. Original reports indicated that the feeds may have been contaminated with Aminopterin, a chemical used as Rat Bait outside of the United States. It has also been used as an anti-cancer drug. Aminopterin causes damage to the kidneys and may suppress the immune system leading to kidney failure and/or life threatening infections. More recent data suggests that the toxin involved in the process may be Melamine, a chemical fertilizer and a component of formica like products. Reports suggest that the melamine may have been introduced into the feed component, wheat gluten, in order to increase the measurable nitrogen in the feed. This allows manufacturers to list higher "protein" content of the feed on their labels since the amount of protein in the feed is determined by the content of nitrogen. It is still not known if Melamine is the actual toxin, because there are no studies to indicated as a kidney toxin in cats. However, melamine may be able to be used as a marker to help indicate if the cat has been exposed to the toxin. Currently there are no simple tests to have this checked, however various veterinary pathology labs around the country are working on developing such tests.
Early warning symptoms include:
Lethargy, Lack of appetite, Excessive Thirst and/or urination, Vomiting.
Unfortunately, some pets have not shown symptoms for up to 60 days from the time of exposure. Obtaining baseline test values can help us determine if your pet is at risk or has been affected.
