Ultrasound technology is used throughout human medicine as a diagnostic modality because it:

• Allows us to visualize internal organs without the risk of radiation
• Allows us to see the internal structure of organs
• Allows us to watch the actual functioning of the organs in real time.

With the aid or ultrasound, we can detect internal abnormalities much sooner and with greater accuracy than ever before.  In addition, we can use the ultrasound image to help us obtain samples for analysis from the internal organs, often times eliminating the need for more invasive surgeries! 

Our new ultrasound unit is equipped with a very sophisticated "color-flow doppler" capability. This modality allows us to detect abnormal blood flow within the chambers of the heart.  During an echocardiogram, we can determine which, if any valves are leaking and how severe the leakage is.  This data helps us generate a treatment plan and determine the prognosis for your pet.
