August is National Immunization Awareness Month

immunizationHere at Alta Rancho Pet & Bird Hospital serving Alta Loma, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Ontario, Claremont and the Inland Empire, we would like to remind you that August is National Immunization Month. It is the time when parents typically schedule physical examinations and vaccinations with their children. However, you should not forget your pets when you make your family’s medical appointments for back to school.

The Importance of Immunizing Your Pets

If you own a pet in Alta Loma, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Ontario, Claremont and the Inland Empire, the best thing you can do for your pet’s health is to schedule yearly appointments for vaccinations at our veterinary hospital. For many communicable diseases, vaccination is the only way to prevent infection.

Some illnesses can even be spread from canine and cat to their human owners. Illnesses and diseases that can cross from pets to humans include rabies, leptospirosis and Lyme Disease. Rabies is transmitted through bites and scratches. Lyme Disease is transmitted through tick bites. If the tick jumps from the dog to the owner, both can become infected. Leptospirosis is transmitted through body fluids and can infect owners if they handle urine or blood from their infected pet.

Birds and small animals can also transmit diseases to their human owners. Birds can transmit parrot fever, which causes headaches, fever and chills. Small animals can transmit Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus, which has symptoms that are similar to the flu.
